ArcMap GIS software had been an essential research tool for many Applied Physics Lab scientists for decades. But by 2019, Esri was strongly recommending that users begin the transition to the company’s next-generation GIS software: ArcGIS Pro. However, given the intense learning curve required for any transition like this, the task was easier said than done.
I also learned the ropes of GIS on ArcMap, but had gained experience with ArcGIS Pro over the course of my year-long APL internship coding an automated mineral mapping pipeline. So I was tasked with putting together an introductory workshop to help APLers get more familiar with the software. The resulting training walked ~10 attendees through the basics of Pro’s tab-based interface and common mapping and analysis workflows used by planetary scientists.
At this point, my workshop materials have become outdated, but if you’d like learn how to use ArcGIS Pro, there are some excellent resources out there, including a collection of tutorials compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey.
